Ingredients
- 12 Hawaiian rolls
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
Equipment Needed
- Mixing bowls
- Whisk
- Small saucepan
- Rubber spatula
- Baking dish or tray
- Microwave-safe bowl
Step-by-Step Instructions
First, let’s start by making the pastry cream. In a small saucepan, combine the heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract over medium heat until it starts to simmer. While that’s heating up, in a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and flour until smooth. Once the cream mixture is bubbling, take a small amount of it and whisk it into the egg mixture to temper the eggs, then gradually add the egg mixture back into the saucepan. Keep whisking until the cream thickens—this should only take a few minutes. Once thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool completely. (See the next page below to continue steps…)
