Equipment Needed
- Large, rimmed baking sheet
- Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (this is non-negotiable!)
- Small offset spatula or the end of a wooden spoon (for nudging)
- Cooling rack (optional, but helpful)
Step-by-Step Instructions
We start with preparation, which is honestly the most time-consuming part. Preheat your oven to 200°F (95°C). Yes, that low. This is not a typo. We are warming, not baking. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat—this prevents sticking and makes cleanup a breeze. Now, lay out your square pretzels in a single layer, as many as you can fit without them touching. I can usually get about 40-50 on a standard sheet. Unwrap all your Hugs chocolates. I find it meditative, but roping in a helper makes this go much faster.
Next, the careful placement. Take one unwrapped Hug and place it directly in the center of each pretzel square. The goal is to have it sitting neatly, not rolling off. Once your baking sheet is fully populated with these chocolate-topped pretzels, it’s time for the gentle oven. Place the tray in the preheated oven for exactly 4 to 5 minutes. Do not walk away! I set a timer for 4 minutes and watch them like a hawk. You are not looking for the Hugs to melt into a puddle, but just to soften and lose their defined shape, becoming shiny and soft to the touch.
This is the most critical, time-sensitive moment. Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. The Hugs will look soft and perfectly pliable. Immediately, take your M&Ms and, one by one, gently press a single candy into the center of each softened Hug. Press down just until the chocolate spreads to the edges of the pretzel. You want to embed the M&M, not push it all the way through. If a Hug starts to slide, use your offset spatula or spoon to nudge it back into place. Work quickly but calmly; the chocolate will begin to set as it cools.(See the next page below to continue…)
