Ingredients
– 4 medium-sized apples (I love using Granny Smith for that tartness!)
– 1 cup sugar
– ½ cup water
– 1 tablespoon corn syrup
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– Food coloring (optional, for visual flair)
– Popsicle sticks (or wooden skewers, if you’re feeling crafty)
Equipment Needed
– A medium saucepan
– A candy thermometer
– A baking sheet lined with parchment paper
– A cooling rack (optional, but helpful for letting excess candy drip off)
– A sharp knife for slicing the apples
Step-by-Step Instructions
First, wash the apples thoroughly to remove any waxy coating. After they’re dry, I like to slice them into even wedges that are about half an inch thick, making sure to remove the seeds. Don’t forget to insert a popsicle stick into each slice for easy handling! Once your apples are prepped, it’s time to make the candy coating. In the saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and corn syrup over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then bring the mixture to a boil. At this point, avoid stirring to prevent any crystallization. This is where your candy thermometer comes in handy! (See the next page below to continue steps…)
